Booming Pet Supplies Plus in Byram

Pet Supplies Plus is open and thriving at ShopRite Plaza on Route 206 in Byram. The store is not a big box, but rather smaller and easy to navigate. It prides itself on top-notch customer service and is an easy way for pet parents to find products, take advantage of amenities such as the store’s pet wash station, curbside pickup street service and a well-trained and knowledgeable pet care team that even carries out orders. to your car.

The store was started by a dog named Evan. A few years ago co-owner Chris Scheid of Morristown adopted Evan to train him to be a guide dog.

“Evan failed a few classes and was declared ineligible to help the blind,” Scheid said. “A number of dogs fail and just aren’t cut out for the job. Of course, we adopted Evan permanently.

Because of Evan, Scheid started frequenting the Pet Supplies Plus in their neighborhood. Scheid had been a banker for years, but had retired from the corporate world and was looking to get into some sort of retail business. He spoke to the owner of his local Pet Supplies Plus store and the wheels started turning.

“I realized many people had adopted pets during COVID and there was no Pet Supplies Plus in Sussex County,” he said.

His childhood friend, Jim Brown, lived in Cranberry Lake, and Brown’s wife, Ann-Marie, was a former veterinary technician. The family has dogs, guinea pigs and chickens. The stars were lining up for the two to go into business together and they got the ball rolling to buy and open a Pet Supplies Plus franchise.

“The ShopRite Plaza space was fine, but the building needed work,” Scheid said. “The space was actually two spaces that needed to be merged, so it took a while.”

Now, Pet Supplies Plus has been open for several months, offering pet owners a wide selection of natural pet food, pet goods and services at low prices, with an emphasis on a unique and rich in-store experience for the “neighbours” (the term Pet Supplies Plus uses for the customer).

Pet parents are encouraged to shop with their dogs at the store, where knowledgeable team members are on hand to answer questions, offer advice, or simply get on all fours to play with the pets that enter. in the store.

“Each member of the team has received extensive training in the areas of natural and holistic foods and we are here to answer questions and guide our neighbors to the right products,” Scheid said.

The store offers birds, reptiles and fish, and is full of all kinds of dog and cat supplies. Most supplies come from the parent company and supply chain issues haven’t really affected the chain.

At the back of the store, the self-service pet wash station is a huge hit.

“We are fortunate to have the opportunity to serve our neighbors with quality pet products and services,” said Ann-Marie Brown, store manager and wife of co-owner Jim Brown.

Scheid’s son, CJ, lives and attends the University of Philadelphia, but enjoys working at the store when he is home.

“I’m proud of my dad who got into this and everyone involved is doing a great job,” he said.

Pet Supplies Plus customer Ralph Hernandez is a huge Pet Supplies Plus fan.

“Super friendly staff and not ‘how much did you come to spend’ type,” he said. “I used self-care [station] for my dog for the first time and I was in and out in 30 minutes.

“This store has all the premium brands that my picky eaters like,” said customer Sahar Elsaadi. “The staff are absolutely amazing. »
