To take a closer look at pet facilities in Santa Barbara County, Noozhawk conducted a series of interviews with local business representatives for this year’s Four-Legged Friends and More guide that’s sure to get you started. wag the tail.
In this interview, Noozhawk spoke with Beth Anne Hathaway, owner of Best Friend Petsitter, to learn more about the pet services they offer.

Question: What is the name of your business or practice?

Q: What is the mission behind your company?
A: Our mission is to tailor a care plan for each family that follows your pet’s usual routine, providing consistency and stability while pet owners are away.
Q: What types of animals does your business cater to?
A: We care for dogs, cats, hamsters, rats, mice, most small rodents, chickens, parakeets, cockatiels, most birds, geckos, turtles, bearded dragons, of most reptiles and fish.
Q: Can you describe the services or products offered by your company?
A: We offer in-home pet sitting, dog walking and animal bathing. Our most popular service is overnight stays where your pet receives 12 hours of continuous care from dinner to breakfast. We also offer daily check-ins, potty breaks and in-hotel pet sitting. Dog walking services include neighborhood dog walks, extended dog walks or hikes, or leisure adventure walks. If your pup likes to play at Hendry’s Beach, we also offer baths to keep your dog squeaky clean. Upon special request, we provide pet concierge services.
Q: How long have you been in this industry?
A: We have been professional pet sitters for over 15 years and have raised and loved our own pets for over 35 years.
Q: What makes your business or practice unique?
A: In addition to our 15+ years of experience and certifications, all of our pet care professionals live in Santa Barbara and are active members of the community. We frequently meet customers at the park or at the grocery store! Our goal is to help pet owners select a trustworthy pet sitter by offering transparent practices and pricing before booking services. It also helps to know that your pet sitter is nearby, vetted, and insured when caring for your pets.
Q: What training, education and experience do you and your staff have? Do you hold any professional certifications?
A: We are Certified Fear Free℠ Professionals and Certified Cat & Dog First Aid by the American Red Cross. Having these certifications means we are trained to safely administer medication, assess potential distress levels and eliminate stressors, and apply first aid measures in an emergency.
Q: How do you deal with behavioral issues?
A: As part of our initial care, we observe pets and listen to pet owners describe their behavioral patterns prior to services. Once we have defined the personalized pet care plan, we implement the same routine and safety measures that pet owners do while at home. In the event that a pet does anything unusual, we will follow the care plan as closely as possible and report any urgent issues to the pet’s owners. Emergencies don’t happen often, but having a plan ahead and communicating effectively with pet owners is key to ensuring a successful outcome.
Q: Do you work with all races/age groups?
A: Best Friend Petsitter works with all breeds and age groups of pets, from energetic puppies and kittens to senior dogs and cats with reduced mobility.
Q: What kinds of challenges have you encountered in the pet care industry? How did you or your team manage them?
A: The biggest challenge is the risk of fire throughout the year. With our entire service area in active fire country, our services go beyond typical pet care and consider developing evacuation plans for each client before services begin. We discuss these plans in advance so our customers know what steps we will take to recover, secure and evacuate their pet if they are subject to mandatory evacuation orders. We eliminate the potential for chaos simply by planning ahead, especially if customers aren’t easily reachable across different time zones or in patchy cellular service areas.
Q: How do you help your client feel comfortable leaving their pet in your care?
A: We meet clients in person to ask questions about the animal’s personality, health, feeding schedule and behavioral habits to get a complete picture of the animal. While they are in our care, we send frequent updates on their pet’s mood and activity for the day.
Q: What’s a fun fact about your business?
A: James and Beth Anne were first introduced to a group of bearded dragons by their third-grade teacher who named them after key figures in the OJ Simpson trial. We had no idea how much we would like “Kato Kaelin!”
