‘Get Your Fix’ to open in Detroit Lakes – Detroit Lakes Tribune
DETROIT LAKES – Get Your Fix-Veterinary Surgical Center will begin booking appointments for cat and dog neutering and neutering surgeries on Friday, November 18. The new Detroit Lakes business is owned by seasoned veterinarian Melissa Hensel. The 41-year-old has worked with large and small animals, she was the trusted vet in day clinics and worked at the Red River Animal Emergency Hospital and Referral Center in Fargo, ND
The daughter of Cecil (Bud) and Sharon Hensel of Frazee has always loved the surgical aspect of her job. However, if she wanted to specialize in surgery, more schooling and an internship would be required.
“I wasn’t interested in it at this point in my career,” she said, adding that she had come up with a business idea that would allow her to spend hours performing routine surgeries (which veterinarians), such as sterilization.
Hensel said vaccines can also be given during surgery, as well as the implantation of a microchip that can help reunite a pet with its owner, if the animal becomes lost. During the spaying or neutering procedure, if an animal needs other routine procedures, such as cherry eye, gastropexy, or hernias, Hensel can perform those as well.
She stressed that routine veterinary care such as annual exams or concerns about a pet’s health should be done at a full-service veterinary clinic. She also does not accept emergencies.
“We bring premium, affordable quality (for spaying and sterilization procedures),” she said.
Hensel estimates she will be able to fix about 25 pets each day of the surgery, which will be done on Fridays and Saturdays. The clinic will be open for drop-offs between 7:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m., with pickups beginning at 3:30 p.m. The business is located at 105 Barbara Ave., Detroit Lakes.
Hensel will be working with longtime friend and Certified Veterinary Technician Kortni Groft. Groft remembers Hensel calling her and pitching the idea, and she was quickly on board.
Hensel noted that during the pandemic there was an increase in the number of pets per household, and at the same time veterinary clinics were unable to perform routine surgeries (due to mandates) . Now clinics are working on the backlog to catch up. Hensel and Groft hope their specialist service will bring some relief to nearby clinics.
