Gulfport’s iconic Mardi Gras store closes after more than 30 years in business

GULFPORT, Miss. (WLOX) – “I frequent this area so I’ve seen some activity,” said Gemini’s Gulfport Krewe representative Shellie Moses. “When I saw the purple, green and gold coming out of the top of the building, it was obvious that his sales plans had finally come true.”

Moses said the closure of Mardi Gras Supplies will have a huge impact on Mardi Gras Krewes and parade goers. She had shopped with the previous owner of the business for over 30 years.

“We have known the owner for a number of years,” she added. “He wanted to sell and enjoy his retirement. I hope that’s what he’s able to do now.

Moses said the store’s former owner had been a fixture in the Mardi Gras community for so many years. She said at one point he had a float in a Pass Christian parade. She said it was bittersweet to see the doors closing.

“Luckily there’s another Mardi Gras store in Ocean Springs where people can go,” Moses said. “It’s going to have a huge impact. It’s just not people here on the Gulf Coast region. It’s people in the Gulf Coast-South region. People from Florida are coming in and buying their stuff. People are leaving New Orleans to come and buy items. Hopefully they find the store in Ocean Springs and can keep it local. We’ll all have to see what the future holds for all of us.

The Pass Road location was the store’s third location in over 30 years of business.
