Montgomery County Maryland

For immediate release: Wednesday August 11, 2021

The Montgomery County Animal Services and Adoption Center (MCASAC) operated by the Montgomery County Office of Animal Services will host a two-week adoption promotion from August 15-28 where adoption fees will be deleted for all small animals such as rabbits and guinea pigs. MCASAC’s “Pocket Pet Palooza” is sponsored by the nonprofit Montgomery County Partners for Animal Well-Being (MCPAW).

The summer months are always busy for shelters and MCASAC sees a large number of small animals entering its doors. In July, only 12 small mammals were adopted while 36 small mammals were taken in by MCASAC. Additional cages had to be added to the small animal adoption room to make room for incoming animals. There is a waiting list for people needing to return small pets, and stray animals continue to enter the building.

Clients can visit the shelter in person to adopt, or clients can begin the process online to reserve a place to speak to a counselor. All potential adopters should review the pre-adoption checklist before visiting or submitting an online questionnaire. Sending a questionnaire does not reserve an animal for adoption and adoptions are done on a first come, first served basis.

The adoption guidelines, pre-visit checklist and adoption questionnaire can be viewed at

The hours of operation of the refuge are from noon to 7 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The refuge is closed to the public on Wednesdays.
