Reddit Talk will allow live audio chat rooms between Redditors

Have you ever wished you could say something to a Redditor that doesn’t quite translate to text? Well, the wait is almost over now that Reddit Talk is on the way, Reddit’s new live audio chat feature.

The new feature was announced today on Reddit (via Engadget). There is already a waiting list for this on the announcement thread, in case you are a moderator who wants to be able to interact via a live voice call with your community. It should be noted that only mods will be able to start Reddit Talks during the testing phase of the feature, although Reddit is considering expanding the ability to host chats to “other trusted members of the community”.

Reddit Talk is testing its customization features so hosts can choose different emojis and background colors for variety and community-specific style. However, only time will tell what the extent of said customization options really is.

As mentioned in the Reddit Talk announcement thread, this feature has the potential to play a big role in how the site handles Ask Me Anythings (AMA), which are sessions where an important person – versus a community. data – is questioned by the community and responds frankly. Reddit’s AMAs vary from hosting big celebrities to adult movie stars to random people with interesting experiences to share, so which one of them stays as standard text will be interesting to see.

One concern raised by / u / Crashdoom in the Reddit Talk announcement thread is that if significant AMAs occur through Reddit Talk, will someone voluntarily have to transcribe what is said to preserve the conversation, given that one of Reddit’s main calls is its “forever” quality made possible by the textual nature of the site? Reddit Product Manager for Creators / u / signal mentions that “after a discussion is completed, the Reddit post for the discussion will exist (with the number of upvotes and comments), but users will not be able to listen to the conversation. . ” Therefore, the question of how the dialogues will be preserved remains unanswered.

It remains to be seen how Reddit Talk will shake up, as well as whether it will be competitive with Discord’s Stage Channels feature, or Clubhouse, the app that sparked all the live audio chat frenzy in the first place.
