SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) — With a potential storm Monday evening, it’s also a reminder to have supplies ready in the event of a power outage.
It pays to stock up on essentials before the next summer storm. DeWayne Kelly, manager of Rocky’s Ace Hardware in East Longmeadow, told 22News what it takes to make him feel safe from the threat of a temporary power outage.
“I would make sure things like water is available, canned food is available…just in case we lose power. I like flashlights, make sure you have fresh batteries. Also candles, but I don’t like the fire safety of this one,” Kelly said.
According Mass.gov, it’s a good idea to prepare a family emergency kit if you need one. This kit should include bottled water, a three-day supply of non-perishable food, hand tools, personal items like medicine or goggles, pet supplies, extra money, and a kit first aid.
If you are facing a long power outage, you may also want to consider getting a generator and definitely a cooler big enough for a good supply of food and water.
Here are some other tips to prepare your home for a power outage:
- Make sure your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working and have fresh batteries.
- Consider purchasing a generator to provide power during an outage. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and learn how to use it safely before failure.
- Know how to use the manual release lever on your electric garage door opener.
- Have a landline phone with a wired receiver.
